Fixing list, column, and icon views on Panther server sharepoints (posted: 4-05-05 9:07 AM)

Mac OS X Server 10.3 (Panther) sharepoints, by default, are set to icon view for Mac OS X clients. A client can log into the server and change this to list or column view, and the change will stick for that session. However, when the user logs out and logs back in, the view is reset to icon view, and there is no way to change this setting in Workgroup Manager. There is a way to change this setting, however, by taking the following steps:

  1. Use Workgroup Manager to create a new regular user on your server, and do not add them to any groups - make sure this user doesn't have administrator privileges. (note: it seems important in some cases to actually create a new user, even if you have an existing non-admin user).
  2. Use Workgroup Manager to change the owner (not the group) of the sharepoint that you want to fix to this new user, and give the user read/write privileges. Be sure not to click the "Apply Changes" button at any point in this process.
  3. Log in over the network as the new user, and select the sharepoint you want to fix. When the sharepoint mounts, set the view as desired (column, list, etc.).
  4. Log off the server, then use Workgroup Manager to set the owner permissions back to the way they were, and try logging in over the network as a regular user. Your views, as set by the temporary user, should now be set.
